The Invisible Work of Being a Nanny: What No One Talks About
Being a professional nanny in the San Francisco Bay Area is so much more than keeping children safe, making snacks, and getting everyone where they need to be.
Career nannies know there’s an entire side of this job that rarely makes it into the job description.
It’s remembering that the blue cup is the only acceptable cup this week.
It’s knowing which snack to pack before soccer because you already know someone will be starving five minutes after you leave the house.
It’s navigating school pickups, activities, playdates, nap schedules, library books, sunscreen, diapers, favorite stuffed animals, and somehow always knowing where that one missing shoe went.
Whether you’re nannying in San Francisco, the Peninsula, Marin, San Jose, Palo Alto, or somewhere else in the Bay Area, so much of what makes a great nanny happens quietly behind the scenes.
And then there’s the emotional side of the job.
Bay Area Nannies Carry a Mental Load, Too
We talk a lot about the mental load parents carry — and rightfully so.
But professional nannies often carry part of that load alongside them.
You walk into work already thinking three steps ahead.
Do we have enough diapers for the outing?
When did she last eat?
Is his soccer uniform clean?
Did Mom say Grandma was picking up on Thursday or Friday?
If the toddler naps in the car right now, is bedtime completely ruined?
And for Bay Area nannies, there may be another layer: planning around traffic, coordinating multiple school and activity schedules, figuring out parking, packing for a full day away from the house, or making sure everyone gets across town on time.
None of those things necessarily appear on your timesheet.
But they’re part of the job.
You’re Caring for Children You Eventually Have to Leave
This might be one of the hardest parts of being a career nanny.
You can spend years with a child.
You know their first words. You were there when they learned to ride a bike. You know exactly how they like their sandwiches cut and which song will calm them down when absolutely nothing else works.
You become part of their everyday world.
And then one day, they don’t need a nanny anymore.
Maybe they start school.
Maybe the family’s needs change.
Maybe someone moves.
And you’re expected to say goodbye to children you’ve loved and cared for — and then eventually walk into another home and start again.
That’s a very unique kind of heartbreak that doesn’t get talked about enough in the nanny industry.
Sometimes You Have a Hard Day and Still Have to Be “On”
Nannies are human.
You might have had a terrible morning.
You might be exhausted.
You might be dealing with something in your personal life that nobody at work knows about.
But then you walk through the door and someone is running toward you yelling your name because they’ve been waiting all morning to show you the rock they found yesterday.
So you smile.
You get on the floor.
You listen to the entire story about the rock.
Because to them, you are one of their safe people.
That emotional responsibility is something career nannies understand deeply.
Your Workplace Is Someone Else’s Home
Nannying is an incredibly personal profession.
Your workplace is someone’s home.
Your employers are also parents.
And the little people you’re responsible for are the most important people in their lives.
That means you’re constantly learning how to communicate, read the room, respect boundaries, advocate for yourself, follow a family’s parenting philosophy, and still bring your own professional childcare experience to the table.
When the relationship works, it can be incredible.
You feel trusted.
You feel respected.
You feel like you’re genuinely part of a team.
But when communication isn’t there, even a Bay Area nanny position that looks perfect on paper can become exhausting.
A great nanny-family match isn’t only about schedule and hourly rate.
It’s about mutual respect, communication, expectations, personality, and whether both sides truly feel comfortable working together.
Professional Nannying Is a Career
This one matters to us.
There are Bay Area career nannies with 5, 10, 15, and even 20+ years of professional childcare experience.
Some have backgrounds in early childhood education, psychology, child development, education, or other related fields.
Some specialize in newborn and infant care.
Others manage multiple children’s schedules, coordinate activities, travel with families, work alongside household staff, assist with household management, and become an incredibly important part of a family’s support system.
Yet professional nannies still sometimes find themselves having to explain that nannying is their career.
Being a professional nanny requires patience, emotional intelligence, adaptability, organization, communication, knowledge of child development, and an enormous amount of responsibility.
The Bay Area has an incredible community of experienced childcare professionals.
That deserves recognition.
Finding the Right Bay Area Nanny Job Matters
When you’ve built a career in childcare, finding your next nanny position isn’t just about finding a job.
It’s about finding the right family.
You should be able to ask questions during an interview.
You should understand the expectations before accepting a position.
Your experience should be valued.
Your boundaries should be respected.
And conversations about guaranteed hours, payroll, PTO, sick time, responsibilities, travel, overtime, and compensation shouldn’t feel uncomfortable or taboo.
A professional nanny-family relationship works best when expectations are clear from the beginning.
That’s something we believe strongly at Little Sprouts & Co.
